A bit of springtime in my window

What a wonderful way to wake up. This is what I see in the morning when I get out of bed and wander out of the hallway and into the kitchen: Beautiful flowers. It almost feels like springtime here, and it makes me happy. Those are paperwhite narcissus that I bought on clearance from Kmart, they were in Christmas clearance items. So I popped the bulbs in the dirt, watered them, and behold, beautiful spring flowers in the winter! :) You also see some basil growing there. Yum. And some other viney kind of plant that I have yet to identify.

The flowers only bloom once per season, but that’s alright. Right now is the perfect time for those flowers to bloom.

Itty bitty baby basil

I moved into my house too late in the year to put out a garden, which made me kind of sad. I’ve always wanted a garden! Oh well, there’s always next year… I need to get the brush pile cleaned out of the back yard anyway (the landlord had a tree fall over two years ago, its remains are still in the yard!), which is a perfect spot for a garden. Not to mention how nice the soil probably is under it! :)

I am currently growing the first plant to go into the garden, basil. I saw this seed starter package and thought I’d give it a go… Basil can also be grown as a house plant. By gardening time next year I’ll have some massive plants to put out! :D The package was super easy to set up… It was just little compressed peat pellets that you get wet to expand, then drop seeds into the preformed holes, keep it wet and in a sunny (but not direct sun) area, and you get seedlings in about 10 days! It’s kind of a self-contained greenhouse to help them grow. I’m so excited about these little seeds, I think I’ll get another pack of these to grow other herbs. The biggest deal is going to be giving them a place to live in the winter time that gets enough sun. I can buy more of the peat pellets and seeds and reuse the plastic tray, but the tray holds ten seedlings at once… That’s a LOT of plants! :P

Oh and have I mentioned… This is the first thing I’ve grown from a seed? :o It’s true! One more reason I’m so excited.

Three cheers for fresh herbs year-round!
