Piano Hero

If you have had any kind of music training, you will probably remember the horror of learning how to read music. We have our cute little ways to remember which note is which letter, F-A-C-E, Every Good Boy Does Fine, etc. Then we learn to translate these notes on paper into a note on our instrument. The note on the paper = C, we do this to produce C on the instrument. The note on the paper = E, we do this to produce E on the instrument. It’s a fairly arduous process. So I went online to try to find some games for my son to play to help him learn music notes. I found a few little games, but none that really looked very fun. I’ll appreciate your comments if you happen to know any that are truly appealing to a child!

While in my searches, I tumbled into the YouTube vacuum. You know it. You look at one video, see something that looks amusing in the related bar… And an hour later you realize you’ve been clicking around on YouTube the entire time. Yep, that was me last night. My clicking was on piano playing, then I saw child piano prodigies (we can all wish, right?) then I came upon “Three year old playing piano” so I clicked through. Then I was transported into a whole new realm of thinking! Watch this video!

This child learned how to play piano by basically playing a giant version of Piano Hero. The color of the note on the paper is the color of the note on the piano. BRILLIANT! It’s like a game!

Modern piano theory has found that children will be more interested in playing a piano if they are playing fun tunes that they know. Wee lad has already asked me to show him how to play the ‘Star Wars’ theme. What if it was color-coded so he could do it himself? Yes, I am currently more than just a little bit excited about this idea. Remember the process I explained earlier, about note to letter to key? What if we remove the letter part, and it’s just note to key? It’s a LOT quicker! And over a period of time your brain will automatically translate from note on page to key, dropping the letter conversion step. If this can be done in the beginning, I really feel that a love of music can more quickly be fostered.

Now don’t get me wrong, music theory is very important to learn. I remember all the workbooks of notes that I had to translate into letters and back. It was a chore. And really, I couldn’t play very good piano until I could quickly do that mental letter conversion. Not that I play very good piano NOW, but I do know those letters now because of all the (grudging) theory work.

The one thing I would (and will) add on this program is letters on the colors. Not necessarily PUSHING the letters, but as the child looks down at the letters while they play, they will subconsciously learn the letter that belongs to the key. I hope. :) Black permanent markers are our friends.

Oh oh wait. Did you want to know where this awesome piano teaching method is?  It’s called the Rainbow Piano Technique, and it can be found at http://www.rainbowpianotechnique.com/. From the website the book is $20, or $40 elsewhere. This totally beats the heck out of piano lessons, and would be a good start to finding out if your child has a musical talent. And it doesn’t require you to know a thing about it. You can pick up a cheap electric keyboard at thrift stores, eBay, or on Craigslist (I would recommend at least four octaves). Why not invest a little bit to bring a new experience (and possibly a lifetime of music) to your child?

A whole new (musical) world

Current Mood:Esctatic emoticon Esctatic

One of the things that my parents gave to me was a love of music. Not just a love of listening to it, but the ability to play it. My father was a musical genius; he could compose a score for a 27 piece orchestra with very little formal training. Unfortunately he passed away when I was five years old, so he wasn’t able to pass the knowledge on to me. I also always had a piano when I was growing up. Some of my earliest memories were banging away at an ugly old upright piano.

While I do have a latent musical talent, I really, really did NOT like the repeated scale playing and boredom that came from piano lessons, and we moved far away from my piano teacher and the house we moved to didn’t have a piano, so I quit piano lessons at 12 years old, after four years. When we moved again a couple of years later we inherited my step-father’s grandmother’s player piano, but the spark to learn was gone, so I never really messed with the piano much except to plink around some.

Now that I am older and have children of my own, I have been very interested in getting a piano for them to learn on. So after scouring Craigslist’s free section, I found one that looked to be in good shape. My (new) step-father, my mother, and my husband went to pick it up. I would have gone along to help, but it was later in the evening, the piano was about 20 miles away, and we have a little boy that would be running around in the middle of everything. So when I called the woman (who was selling her house, and either the person buying it didn’t want the piano or the woman didn’t want to pay for moving it), and she told me that she lived in a one story house, and there were only a couple of stairs in for it to go down. When they got there they found that the piano was in the back of the house, and the house was on top of a hill, with two FLIGHTS of stairs to get down. That lady really, really should have disclosed this. I wouldn’t have sent my family after it had I known it. However, she also learned to disclose fully the conditions that people will have to deal with… She now has a house with several broken kitchen tiles (from rolling the piano across it) and three broken wooden stairs (from bumping the piano down). THAT was a job for professional movers who are bonded and insured, not people in a truck. It was also a learning experience for the husband: You should keep your toes out of dropping distance of a 400 lb piano. So to add to the list of things broken by the piano: One big toe.

However, the piano is now safe and sound in its new home. It’s current resting spot is questionable, as it is on top of a rather large heating and cooling vent. This can wreak havoc on the wood and the tuning, especially in the humid Midwest. We’re up in the air as to what to do about it, whether to cover the vent or to move the piano. We’ll figure it out.

So the overall condition of this piano is actually very good, with some minor repair needed that we can probably do ourselves (aside from tuning, of course!). It has a few keys that stick, but because of the construction of the piano, we can just open it up easily and put things back together. It’s just a matter of reattaching some of the mechanisms. The body of the piano is supreme. There’s only very light scratches in the wood, the keys are all in almost perfect shape. It needed a LOT of cleaning, the keys were really grubby, but after an hour of meticulous scrubbing they are shiny and pretty. The higher notes appear to have had something drop or sitting on them for an extended period; half an octave of keys stick pretty badly. Nothing that can’t be easily repaired. It also lost a wheel in the move, hopefully we can find one at some point. I would also like to find a matching piano bench. But all in all, for free except for the time, trouble, and gas from moving, it was a pretty good deal. :) And I can pass on the gift of music to my children, as well as re-learning to play.

Computer commercials

Current Mood:Bored emoticon Bored

As we’re cruising toward 2010 (wow, now that’s crazy to think about!), we are seeing more and more computer-related commercials as computers become more of a household item. After seeing a rather strange set of commercials by Norton (we’ll get to it in a bit), I’ve come to realize that there are some VERY strange computer commercials.

I’ll start with my favorite strange commercial, IE8:

While you’ve got your barf bag out, check out Microsoft’s Live Search commercial:

Because Microsoft has other crappy commercials, we can’t forget the Songsmith commercial. It’s long. And bad.

We’ll add to Microsoft’s strange videos this (banned?) XBox commercial:

Now, I really like Intel’s rock star commercial. A lot. I’d wager to say that this is my current favorite commercial, period.

While this technically isn’t a computer commercial, did you know that your gangster in Grand Theft Auto only need a Coke? It’s true!

Another (pretty odd) soda computer game commercial, the Mountain Dew WoW drinks.

FreeCreditReport.com has a lot of silly commercials, but this one is really weird.

Probably everyone has seen the Travelocity “Roaming Gnome” commercials, but have you seen THIS Travelocity commercial?

ETrade wasted $2 million on this weird SuperBowl ad. It says so right in the ad.

The Google GMail commercial is err… well… yeah. You give it a peek.

Speaking of enhancement, GoDaddy gave us some funky commercials.

Of course we can’t forget Dell’s irritating ads, like the Lollipop commercial. You’re excused from watching it if you’ve already been subjected:

We can’t let Apple’s huge “I’m a Mac” campaign slide under the radar. The “Bean Counter” commercial is a bit of a hypocrisy.  How much does Apple spend for advertising versus Windows (who is PC)? You know a hip young guy charges a lot to be in a commercial. Oh yeah, and the fact that the commercials are on every channel.

Have you seen Microsoft’s “I’m a PC” response to the “I’m a Mac” ads? Another weird Microsoft commercial. “I have a beard” wha? Watch for Bill.

Apparently, if you use a Zune you get a free acid trip! I kid, this is actually a really fun concept commercial.

Oh, and the Norton commercial I mentioned? I didn’t forget it. It’s a montage. Before we go into it… Check out the last two. If you miss the first couple of lines, you have lost the entire point of the commercial. So you leave, grab a drink, walk back… And you see “Protect your chicken from Dokken?”

Got one to add? I’ve got a comment box below. I think you know what to do. ;)

I won free gas cards!

Current Mood:Esctatic emoticon Esctatic

In today’s online world, you see marketing EVERYWHERE. Banners, pop-ups, spam. If you’re on social media, you get it even more. So with all of the marketing schemes, I am always very, very skeptical of promos and giveaways. Exceedingly so, almost to the point of paranoia. I do not sign up for anything. Not blogs, websites, anything. So when I first found @GasGardenTrivia (ran by the wonderful Gabbie) and I saw “Free gas card giveaway!” I snorted at the thought, but I do enjoy a game of trivia, so I joined in the game. Now bear in mind that at the time of posting Gas Garden has only recently changed their format to a sign up on a website format. When I played it was a daily trivia question posted to Twitter, or I would not have even gotten involved. I don’t sign up for things, as stated above. She would ask a question via Twitter, I would answer. I figure if she started trying to sell me crap that I’d just block her and that would be the end of it. But lo and behold, I earned enough points to win $10 worth of gas cards! So I sent her my address and didn’t hold my breath too much. I am truly skeptical.

DSC00667

So when I got my cards in the mail and was even more exited than I had been when I was notified that I had won! :) But because I am a true skeptic of free things, I haven’t said a whole lot about it until now, because I’d not tested the gas cards to make sure they work! (Told you I’m a skeptic!) Sure enough, my car is $10 worth of gas happier now.

So as I stated previously, they changed the format of how their daily trivia takes place. You now go to a website and play not only trivia, but fun picture search games and such. The drawback (in my opinion)? You have to register. I think I mentioned that I don’t sign up for anything. HOWEVER. Because I wasn’t marketed to with this previous win, I have gone ahead and signed up, and no, I’ve not been marketed to. No spam, no extra crap in my mailbox.

So how can YOU win free gas? It’s really easy. You go to the website and play the trivia. You don’t even have to have a Twitter account now to play! But you do get the daily reminder from them to go play to earn the points via Twitter, which is handy. So what are you waiting for? Go earn some free gas! It’s not fast, but it’s something to do, right? :)

Disclosure: I am in no way affiliated with Gas Garden Trivia. I have not been asked to publish this nor am I receiving any kind of endorsement.

Getting what you pay for

Current Mood:Confused emoticon Confused

One of the selling points of my house was “remodeled bathroom.” This is generally a strong selling point. and if I were coming in to look at the house as a buyer, I would take this into consideration! However, with living in the house, I have really paid attention to how cheaply things have been done here. The bathroom remodel, for example.

At first glance, the bathroom looks bright and fresh. The oak on the under-sink cabinet matches the  oak floor trim,  window trim,  and door frame. The toilet is new, the sink basin and the tub match. However, looking closer, the room was done poorly. Here’s a prime example of what I’m talking about, with the window trim:Window corner
Glancing at it, it looks fine. Taking a closer look, however, you will see that the trim is offset. It is so cheap that the wood veneer is coming off. It’s like this on several of the corners of the wood trim, it was like this when I moved in, and this house hadn’t been lived in since the remodel. Strike two for the window: The mini blinds. The blinds are generic ones that you can buy anywhere, which is fine, but these are the type that the excess can be removed so it fits the window properly. The instructions are on the package.

The medicine cabinet has the lovely vanity lights built in. However, there’s also an overhead light fixture… that doesn’t work. Were the wires just re-routed from the overhead light to the vanity lights? Would it have been so difficult to remove the overhead fixture? Perhaps put in a fan?

The nice new toilet wasn’t installed properly, and it leaks around the base. It’s been “fixed” twice, and it still leaks. The seat that it came with doesn’t open all the way.

The sink doesn’t sit properly on the cabinet, so there’s a giant gap between the sink and the cabinet.

Now, with all this said, this house costs under $80k and it is “move-in ready.” However, this house sat on the market for three years with only one offer. A Realtor I am not, but common sense dictates that you get what you pay for. If you aren’t going to pay for installation, at least get decent quality stuff that is easily installed properly! Take the measurements, have the hardware store cut it for you. And if you’re paying someone in beer to get the job done, at least make sure that they have done this before, and that they haven’t had the beer BEFORE the installation!

Oh, and when I asked for permission to put up a toilet paper holder and a couple of towel racks, I got heat. As though I am going to make the bathroom look worse!

Scott AFB Air Show Sept 19, 2009

Current Mood:Cool emoticon Cool

My older son’s birthday was Friday, and he’s also in Civil Air Patrol (which I highly recommend to parents looking for an organization for their older children). So what better way to celebrate both than to take him to an air show at Scott Air Force Base? We had a good time, but unfortunately none of the kids from his CAP squadron were there. He did get a chance to meet kids from other squadrons though!

Driving in, we saw a C-17. This thing was MASSIVE! It’s a cargo plane, and seeing this giant thing flying truly was an amazing sight to see.C-17
Coming in, we got to see a stunt plane. This was absolutely amazing! It’s a Fagen MX-2, and it did lots of crazy tumbles and dives! I caught some video of it:

We also got to walk around and see several planes up-close, including a favorite of the boys (husband included!), the A-10 Warthog.
warthog1
Wee lad liked checking out the landing gear:warthog2
It was even armed with inert missiles:warthog3
Another cool plane we got to see was the Boeing 747-400 Dreamlifter. And really, you couldn’t walk around much in the place without having seen it, this thing is HUGE! Dreamlifter
There were guys flying around with parachutes and motors, called the Golden Knights.
GoldenKnight
We got to see several Japanese WWII plane replicas. This is the Japanese Nakajima B5N, “Kate”Kate
We got to go inside of a C-5, the world’s largest aircraft.
C-5
Wee lad talked one of the nice airmen “What’s inside this door?” (on the ramp of the C-5) and he showed us the winch:
winch
I think the most fun I had was watching the Canadian Snowbirds. They were amazing!

SnowbirdsI also captured some short videos of them:

The air show was a really good time, and everyone enjoyed checking out the planes. My older son (the birthday boy) has hopes of flying planes when he’s older, so this was really right up his alley.

Okay so a bit of disclosure about the information on this air show: I know absolutely nothing about airplanes. The identification came from my husband, the air show’s website, and lots of Google. :)

♪ I am so excited!! ♫

Current Mood:Esctatic emoticon Esctatic

So maybe you saw my squawks about music today on social media. I was rather verbal and jubilant. Probably not. Anyway, I am SO incredibly excited because of two bands coming to St. Louis next month! And a week apart at that!

First up: Presidents of the United States of America. No, not that dude that lives in the White House, the band. Let me brush you up on your 90′s alt rock:

Yeahhhh those guys. Brings back so many happy memories of a simpler time in my life. And the music is just pure fun.

They will be at Taste of St. Louis October 2nd. More infos here.

Then there’s They Might be Giants. Surprisingly some people just have not heard of them. Let me educate you on one of the most brilliant bands EVER!
They Might Be Giants- Birdhouse In Your Soul

They Might Be Giants-Istanbul (Not Constantinople)

YAY! They will be at The Pageant performing their Flood album (which these songs are from) on October 9th. More info here. I’m kind of sad that they aren’t going to be doing one of their kid shows, this one is 14+. My kids love TMBG. Not as much as me though! MUAHAHA! ;)

Now if you’ll notice, these are both ’90′s bands. Am I becoming an old person stuck in the musical niche, like my step-dad was hung up on the ’70′s? Ugh I hope not.

This is ADD

Current Mood:Playful emoticon Playful

Yeah, I have ADD. Nowadays, who doesn’t? But I was that crazy, obnoxious kid in school that most of the other kids avoided. Yeah yeah, not looking for sympathy. We all had our issues in childhood.

So I was puttering around doing my normal five different switch-off tasks (multitasking is easy, switching gears notsomuch) and this song popped into my head. Let’s see, current tasks are: Getting random housecleaning done, web design, graphic design, waiting on server delivery, getting data and customers prepped for said server delivery… That’s just the ones off the top of my head at the moment. I’m sure I have another 20 projects kicking around. It’s how I work, and hope that it gets done. :)

At any rate, for people that really don’t understand what ADD is like, there’s this boffo ska song that is the “non-important” goal process of an ADD person in a nutshell. Of course we can achieve goals… It’s just a bit more difficult. ;)

I present to you: The Mighty Mighty Bosstones – Someday I Suppose.
And yeah, it has a commercial; it’s the only embeddable video I could find.

There was a place
And the name of the place escapes me
When I can’t rememeber
It irritates me
Could be I can’t remember
Could be I choose to not,
Let’s move the song along
And try to find the plot
There was a girl and I don’t know her name either
She gave me love and I swore I’d never leave her
If I did I’d come back someday and find her
Maybe I will I should write down a reminder
One day! One day who knows
Someday I suppose
There was a verse that I was gonna write I haven’t yet
But there’s still a chance I might
An open book
That I still want to close
I’ll find the time
Someday I suppose
A place and time,
I wanna be and spend a storyline
That’s happy in the end
Plans are made
with promises so certainly uncertain
I can’t wait to set things straight
before they close the curtain
One day! One day who knows
Someday I suppose
The more I sort things out
The more it gets distorted
I sort of think I’m better off just leaving it unsorted
The more I try to change it’s course
the more off course it goes
Of course I’ll reach my destination someday I suppose
Sort it out,
Get distorted
One day who knows
Hide behind,
Someday I suppose

What a wonderful weekend!

Current Mood:Esctatic emoticon Esctatic

I had the most wonderful weekend! I went out Friday night for a friend’s going away party. There was a lot of drunken debauchery and many hugs (yes, even before the drunken part), and I ended up being the designated driver. I also got to learn how to eat fire(!). While it was great fun… I didn’t get home til after 4am. Weekends are my husband’s days to sleep in, so wee lad had me up bright and early! I was expecting it though. Besides, I had also invited over a vegan friend and her husband for a bbq! She’d never had vegan bbq before (they have an apartment so haven’t tried doing it), so I thought I’d cook for her. Well… I didn’t know we were very low on charcoal, so about all that got done was heating up three ears of corn! Unfortunately they didn’t have a whole lot of time, so they couldn’t stay for a round two of waiting for new coals to get ready, and they left. Not even five minutes after THEY left, Rusty, who I had invited to the bbq as well, showed up with Lana, another friend of ours who had just gotten back from a two week trip to Burning Man. She had also invited her friend Sarah, who has two little girls, who played with wee lad for a long time. :) We went to the grocery store to replenish the charcoal (and to pick up other yummies) to try the bbq again. Success! We had delicious veggie kebabs, corn on the cob, baked potatoes, and grilled pineapple. We had lots of beer and great conversation. Lovely, lovely day!

Sunday morning we had a lazy time hanging around the house. We decided to go to Mallo’s Bakery in Belleville for coffee and donuts (yeah, I know, most donuts aren’t vegan), then went yard saling. We decided to have some more chill out time, just puttering around the house, when I get a text message from my friend Alaina, who wanted to hang out with someone. I invited her over, and suggested she pick up Rusty on the way, who lives near her, and she also brought Murdock, who lives upstairs from Rusty. The husband had also invited over his DJ friend, Cameron, to come over and spin some records. Thankfully everyone was later in coming over, so I was able to get wee lad off to bed without much protest.

And, glory be, Rusty came bearing gifts! He brought some totally awesome Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead, a Mexican holiday) wall art and a fire pit! Did I mention how fab Rusty really is? :) So between the mini rave in the basement (turntables + party lights) and hanging around the fire pit in the back yard, we had a wonderful evening!

We truly are blessed to have so many wonderful friends. I look forward to having people over more often! :) We will probably start having full out parties once we are 100% set up.

I leave you with Scooter – Friends (warning, it’s happy hardcore techno crazy stuff, but I love it!):
